Tomorrow, June 28, marks the 20th edition of the historic “Pulizia dei Fondali al Passetto” — a symbolic event of civic engagement and environmental protection, promoted by ASD Kòmaros Sub Ancona, the first association in Italy to launch a large-scale marine cleanup operation two decades ago.

Held under the patronage of the Municipality of Ancona and the Conero Park Authority, the initiative involves a wide network of partners: from the Harbour Master’s Office to the Grottaroli del Passetto Association, as well as the Monsub Club of Jesi and the Cooperative of Motorized Fishermen, all supported by numerous local organizations.
A truly synergic effort that unites institutions, businesses, and citizens in a shared mission: restoring the health and dignity of the stretch of sea that mirrors the city itself.

Among the key participants this year is once again the Pelikan System naval unit from Garbage Group, a flagship company of Ancona’s blue economy. The Pelikan, a patented system for waste collection and environmental monitoring, is equipped with drones and cutting-edge technology.

The gathering point is set for 9:30 a.m., in front of the Passetto staircase. Volunteer divers — both freedivers and scuba divers — will dive from shore and from boats, including access via the La Luna beach facility.

During the operation, participants will recover all kinds of waste, from single-use plastics carried by storms and rivers to discarded objects dating back to the 1960s — a reminder of the seriousness of the issue and the urgency of action.

Support at sea will be provided by the grottaroli of the Passetto, while local beach establishments will ensure logistical assistance from land.

Beyond the cleanup itself, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of our daily actions.
The Passetto is not just a beach or a postcard view: it is the memory and identity of Ancona, and for 20 years, it has been a living laboratory where circular economy and community cooperation come together.
