Camerano used to be one of the castles build to protect Ancona and its surroundings. Together with the castles of Sirolo, Varano, Massignano and Poggio, it was in charge of defending the Conero area. The little town rises on top of a high hill which allows the most fabulous panoramic view over the Marche region till the Apennines Mountains.
The main touristic attraction in Camerano is the amazing
underground town, an extensive network of tunnels and caves, some of which are so wide and structured to be defined "temples".
The origin is not clear but most probably they date back to the pre-roman era when the area was inhabited by the Picens. Over time the caves have been used in a variety of ways, yoday they are open for guided tours and wine tasting.
The first weekend of September Camerano celebrates the local red wine with the famous "
Rosso Conero Festival". For three days locals together with a growing number of tourists enjoy street artists, concerts, Dj sets, gastronomic specialities and of course the best production of Rosso Conero.
Named after the family who used to own the property, today the
Bosco Mancinforte is the local public garden where it's possible to admire more then 150 species of ornamental plants and trees and a lovely view from the panoramic balcony.
In the main square we find the statue portraying Carlo Maratti, great painter and restorer who lived in Camerano between the 17th and 18th century. His main work is the "Vergin with Child and Saints" kept in the local Church of Immacolata Concezione (Immaculate Conception). A collection of his works are displayed in the city museum.
